What we’ve verified

Each note below comes from a different Hey Memphis guide, written when we checked this place at the source.

  • Downtown Memphis RestaurantsThe Pinch, the Pyramid & the edges · verified August 5, 2026

The spicy fried chicken that launched a national chain, still frying at the Front Street original daily from 11am. Walk in; worth whatever the wait is. (The whole story — Mason, 1953 — is on our best fried chicken guide.)

  • Best Fried Chicken in Memphis: The Verified ListThe legends · verified August 1, 2026

The salt-and-cayenne crust that GQ once called one of ten 'meals worth flying for' — a recipe Napoleon 'Na' Vanderbilt perfected in Mason, TN in 1953, renamed for his son Gus in 1984, and brought to Front Street in 2001. Spicy by default, never frozen, served on white bread. Downtown runs Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat to 10; Bartlett, Germantown, East Memphis, and Southaven have their own rooms — and the Mason original is a day trip of its own.
