TL;DR

Memphis is greener than its reputation. Shelby Farms Park is one of the biggest urban parks in the country (40+ miles of trails); Overton Park holds a 126-acre old-growth forest in the middle of Midtown; and the redesigned Tom Lee Park and the Big River Crossing bridge walk put you right on the Mississippi. Most are free — the Botanic Garden ($12) and Lichterman Nature Center are the paid exceptions. A couple have current closures worth knowing (Mud Island's bridge, Meeman-Shelby's pool). Every spot here was verified at its own site in July 2026.

For a city known for barbecue and blues, Memphis is surprisingly green — one of the biggest urban parks in the country, old-growth forest inside Midtown, a redesigned riverfront, and a growing web of paved greenways you can bike for miles. Most of it is free.

Here's the guide, by type — big parks, the riverfront, trails and greenways, gardens, and the state parks on the edges of town — verified at each park's own site in July 2026, with what's free, what costs, and the few spots with current closures so you're not surprised at the gate.

  • V&E GreenlineVollintine-Evergreen (Midtown)

A 1.75-mile natural-surface rail-trail through the Vollintine-Evergreen neighborhood — creeks, public art, a Level I Arboretum, entirely volunteer-built and maintained. The quiet, local counterpoint to the paved greenways. Free.

  • T.O. Fuller State ParkSouthwest Memphis

A 1,600-acre park with 8+ miles of trails near the Chucalissa archaeological site — including a rare recycled-tire walking trail. Historically significant: one of the first state parks in the country open to Black citizens. Free to enter.

The honest answers

What's the best park in Memphis?

Shelby Farms Park for sheer scale — one of the largest urban parks in the country, with 40+ miles of trails, a lake, and the buffalo herd. Overton Park is the Midtown pick, with 8+ miles of trails through a 126-acre old-growth forest. Both are free.

Which Memphis parks are free?

Most of them — Shelby Farms, Overton Park, Tom Lee Park, Big River Crossing, all the greenways (Shelby Farms Greenline, Wolf River Greenway, V&E Greenline), and the two state parks (Meeman-Shelby, T.O. Fuller) are free to enter. The paid exceptions are the Memphis Botanic Garden ($12 adults) and Lichterman Nature Center (around $9).

Where can I walk or bike along the Mississippi River in Memphis?

Big River Crossing is the standout — nearly a mile across the river on the Harahan Bridge, the longest public pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Mississippi, free and open until 10pm with a nightly light show. Tom Lee Park runs right along the downtown riverfront, and Mud Island's River Walk is open (though its pedestrian bridge is currently closed).

What's the best paved trail for biking in Memphis?

The Shelby Farms Greenline — a flat, shaded, paved rail-trail from Midtown out to Shelby Farms Park and Cordova, connecting to the Wolf River Greenway (14 miles open and growing). Together they're the backbone of car-free riding in the city.

How current is this list?

Every park was verified at its own or the official state/city site in July 2026, including current closures (Mud Island's pedestrian bridge, Meeman-Shelby's pool). Trail mileage and hours change, so we date our checks. When something changes, we change the page.
