Hey Memphis is a free daily newsletter about the Memphis area, published by Hutch International LLC. We keep this policy short and in plain English, because that’s how we try to do everything. It explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Questions? Just email hey@heymemphis.co.
What we collect
- Your email address— when you subscribe, so we can send you the newsletter. That’s the only thing we ask you for.
- Basic usage data — like which pages you visit, your general location (city-level), and the type of device and browser you use. This comes from standard analytics and helps us understand what readers find useful.
- Advertising data— if you arrive from one of our ads, our advertising tools note that so we can measure whether the ad worked. See “Advertising” below.
- Referral info — if a friend refers you, we use a small first-party cookie to credit them for the referral.
How we use it
We use your information to send you the newsletter, to understand what readers like so we can make it better, to run our referral rewards, and to measure and improve our advertising. We do not sell your personal information, and we never will.
Who we share it with
We rely on a few trusted service providers to run Hey Memphis. They only handle your data to provide their service to us:
- beehiiv — our email platform. It stores your subscription and sends the newsletter.
- Google Analytics— measures site usage so we can see what’s working.
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram) — measures our ad performance (see below).
- Vercel — hosts the website.
Cookies and tracking
Like most websites, we use cookies and similar technologies for analytics, advertising measurement, and to remember a referral. You can control or clear cookies in your browser settings, and most browsers let you block them. Some parts of the site may work less smoothly if you do.
Advertising
We run ads on platforms like Meta (Facebook and Instagram) to reach more Memphians, and we use the Meta Pixel to see whether those ads actually lead to signups. To match a visit back to an ad, and to build advertising audiences — like making sure we stop showing signup ads to people who already subscribe, or asking Meta to find people similar to our readers — a hashed (scrambled, one-way) version of your email may be shared with Meta — we never send Meta your actual email address, only an irreversible hash. You can manage how Meta uses your data in your Meta ad settings, and you can opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe anytime— every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click and you’re out, no hard feelings.
- See or delete your data — email hey@heymemphis.co and we’ll take care of it.
- Control cookies — through your browser settings, plus the opt-out links above.
Every newsletter we send includes a one-click unsubscribe link and our mailing address, in line with U.S. anti-spam law. We only email you the things you signed up for.
Children
Hey Memphis is meant for a general adult audience and isn’t directed to children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we’ll update this page and change the “last updated” date at the top.
