Coffee Shops in Memphis

Memphis coffee had a rough couple of years — a wave of beloved shops closed in 2024 and 2025, and a lot of the information floating around hasn't caught up yet. Nobody deserves to cross town for a locked door and a for-lease sign.

So here's a list that's current: every shop below was verified open at its own website in July 2026, with the neighborhood, the hours pattern, and the one thing that makes it worth crossing town for. (And at the bottom: the recent closures, so you can update your bookmarks.)

Downtown & South Main

• Crazy Gander Coffee CompanyDowntown, 150 Madison

  Pour-overs and espresso inside an old Memphis bank building — marble-and-brass grandeur with your cortado. Weekdays 7am–4pm, weekends 8am–4pm.

• Dr. Bean's Coffee & TeaSouth Main, 387 S Main

  Roasts in-house with what they call a data-driven roasting process — and supplies beans to cafés around town, so you may have been drinking Dr. Bean's without knowing. Open daily; check their site before a long sit.

• Hustle & DoughSouth Main, 477 S Main

  A full sourdough bakery wearing a café's clothes — the bread program is the point, the espresso keeps up. Mornings through mid-afternoon; Bar Hustle takes the room over at night.

• Memphis Chess ClubDowntown, 195 Madison

  A real chess club with a real café license: espresso by day, local beer and cocktails by night, boards on every table. Yes, you can just play chess.

• Qahwa Coffee BarDowntown, 109 N Main

  The Civic Center's coffee stop, weekday-morning-focused with shorter weekend hours — check their Instagram before a Saturday trip.

• French Truck CoffeeDowntown, Crosstown & Highland

  The New Orleans roaster's chicory-yellow outposts — Madison Ave, Crosstown Concourse, and South Highland. Ethically sourced, roasted fresh, reliably open.

Midtown & Crosstown

• Otherlands Coffee BarMidtown, 641 S Cooper

  The Midtown living room: free wifi, rotating local art, a vegan-friendly menu, and a “secret gift shop” their own site is proud of. Weekdays 7:30am–3pm, weekends until 5.

• Café EclecticMidtown + Harbor Town

  The original scratch Memphis coffee house — their words, and fair: scratch bakery, soda fountain, all-day breakfast, and a drive-thru. From 7am most days.

• Pearl's Tea & Coffee HouseMidtown, 1330 Peabody

  Authentic Vietnamese coffee — cà phê sữa đá done right — plus boba and Vietnamese snacks. Hours post on their Instagram; afternoons are the safe bet.

The one that comes to you

Memphis's most-followed coffee operation doesn't have an address — it has a schedule.

• Byway CoffeeMobile — rotating locations across the city

  Avery Amstutz bought a 1973 Airstream off a neighbor for $6,000 in late 2023, opened for coffee in July 2024, and turned it into a business CNBC pegged at more than $500,000 in first-year revenue — profitable from day one, and she'd never pulled a shot when the espresso machine went in. There are two trailers now. The house blend is roasted in town at Comeback Coffee, the pastries come from Lucy J's, and the signature menu rotates monthly (the Ube Cold Foam Latte is the one people chase). Because it moves, the schedule is the product: Byway posts the week's stops to Instagram every Sunday and updates locations there through the week — so check @bywaycoffee.co before you drive, not the map.

Broad Ave, Highland & East

• Cxffeeblack — Anti Gentrification Cxffee ClubHighland Heights, 3386 Bowden

  The most important coffee story in Memphis: a Black-owned roaster rebuilding coffee's Black history, covered by Fast Company, the BBC, and NPR, whose REP CHAIN program pays farmers — their words — “like artists.” Weekdays 7:30am–4pm, weekends 9am–4pm.

• City & StateBroad Ave Arts District

  Craft coffee bar and shop-able retail floor — beans, brewers, and gear — since 2015. Mon–Sat from 7–8am, Sundays 8am–2pm. The Broad Ave stroll starts here.

• Belltower CoffeeHighland + Shelby Farms

  Two locations, both daily: 525 S Highland (7am–6pm) with a pet-friendly patio and an attached studio running open mics and pottery classes, and the Shelby Farms visitor center (7am–4pm) for post-Greenline recovery.

• The HubEast Memphis, Briarcrest

  A full café inside Mission Church, open to everyone — one of the few east-of-240 laptop harbors open into the evening most weekdays. Closed Sundays (it's busy).

• Ramblin' Joe's (Ugly Mug Coffee)Winchester Rd

  Memphis's Ugly Mug brand lives on under a new name — same company, new sign. Café hours vary; the beans ship from their site.

The suburbs & DeSoto County

The metro pours too — and two of these are reasons to drive.

• Square Beans CoffeeCollierville Town Square

  On the historic square since 2008, pouring Memphis-roasted J. Brooks coffee with Zio Matto gelato on the side. Mon–Sat 7am–5pm, closed Sundays. Pairs with our Collierville guide.

• Congregation CoffeeGermantown

  The community-gathering café out east — weekdays 6:30am–4pm, weekends 7:30am–2pm (kitchen closes at 2 daily). The Germantown morning move before Farm Park.

• Coffee CentralSouthaven + Hernando, MS

  DeSoto County's coffee anchor, where a portion of all proceeds supports survivors of human trafficking and the live-music nights benefit local nonprofits. Southaven runs 6am weekdays, till 8pm Fridays and Saturdays; closed Sundays.

Recently closed — pour one out

So you can update your bookmarks: Comeback Coffee closed its Uptown café in April 2025 (the brand lives on in cans and pop-ups). Vice & Virtue and Low Fi are gone from South Main — Hustle & Dough and Dr. Bean's now hold those corners. Edge Alley closed in 2023, Café Keough in 2024 after a ten-year run, and 17 Berkshire poured its last in April 2025 — the same spring it earned a James Beard semifinalist nod. Reverb's roastery wound down in late 2025, and Poplar Perk'n closed in 2024. Every shop still on this page was verified open in July 2026.
