TL;DR

The best fried chicken in Memphis: Gus's World Famous (the salt-and-cayenne recipe born in Mason, TN in 1953, downtown on Front Street since 2001), Uncle Lou's honey-dipped 'Sweet Spicy Love' in Whitehaven, Jack Pirtle's — frying since 1957 — and the soul food institutions: The Four Way in Soulsville and Alcenia's downtown. Ten spots, every one verified at its own source in August 2026, plus the two famous names that have closed.

Fried chicken is one of the few foods Memphis exports with a straight face — the line outside a plain brick building on Front Street is full of people who flew here partly for it. But the city's fried chicken story is much bigger than one restaurant: it runs through Soulsville dining rooms, a Whitehaven drive-thru with a honey-dipped secret, and a homegrown chain that out-fried the Colonel here for almost seventy years.

Here's the current, verified list: ten fried chicken spots confirmed at their own sources in August 2026, with the history told straight and the closed rooms flagged — because two famous names on old lists are gone. (The broader tradition lives on our soul food guide.) — Josh

The legends

The birds with national reputations — earned the slow way.

  • Gus's World Famous Fried ChickenDowntown, 310 S Front St + 5 metro rooms

The salt-and-cayenne crust that GQ once called one of ten 'meals worth flying for' — a recipe Napoleon 'Na' Vanderbilt perfected in Mason, TN in 1953, renamed for his son Gus in 1984, and brought to Front Street in 2001. Spicy by default, never frozen, served on white bread. Downtown runs Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat to 10; Bartlett, Germantown, East Memphis, and Southaven have their own rooms — and the Mason original is a day trip of its own.

  • Uncle Lou's Fried ChickenWhitehaven, 1725 Winchester Rd

The honey-dipped bird Guy Fieri renamed 'Sweet Spicy Love' on air in 2008 — great-grandmother Rosie Gillespie's recipe, fried to order since April 2001. Note the address: Uncle Lou's moved to 1725 Winchester Rd in early 2025 (old lists still print Millbranch). Dining room daily; drive-thru to midnight Mon–Sat.

  • Jack Pirtle's ChickenMidtown, 1370 Poplar Ave + 7 more

Frying since 1957 — Jack Pirtle started on South Bellevue as a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee, then went his own way, and eight Memphis locations later the drive-thru bird and the chicken on a stick are city heritage. Poplar store: Mon–Sat 9am–10pm, Sun from 10.

The soul food standard-setters

In Memphis, fried chicken's home base is the soul food table — these rooms set the bar.

  • The Four WaySoulsville, 998 Mississippi Blvd

The oldest soul food room in the city — serving since 1946 — where the fried chicken comes in every cut (breast and wing, thigh and leg, whole wings) alongside turkey and dressing. Dr. King ate here. Wed–Sun 11am–5pm, Saturday jazz brunch 11–2.

  • Alcenia'sThe Pinch, 317 N Main St

BJ Chester-Tamayo has fried chicken to order downtown since 1997 — with a welcome that's made the Today Show and the New York Times' destination lists. Tue–Fri 11am–5pm, Sat 9am–3pm, closed Sun–Mon.

  • Southern Hands Homestyle CookingHickory Hill + Kirby + Millbranch

Mrs. Betty Baskin and her five children have grown the fried-chicken-and-cornbread-loaf formula from one room in 2008 to three across south and east Memphis. Winchester flagship: Sun–Fri 11am–6pm, Sat to 5.

  • The CupboardMidtown, 1400 Union Ave

The city's daily meat-and-three since 1943 — when fried chicken is on the meat board, order it with three vegetables and thank us later. Open 7am–8pm every single day.

The new school and the visitors

Chicken and waffles, Nashville heat, and a Filipino newcomer.

  • SageDowntown, 94 S Main St

The brunch play: chicken and waffles ($17) and the 'Soul Waffle' — a waffle stuffed with greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken — from the fusion-soul room on South Main. Brunch Sat 11am–3pm, Sun 11–4; open Wed–Sat otherwise.

  • Hattie B's Hot ChickenCooper-Young

Nashville's hot chicken family business, with its Memphis room on South Cooper — the heat scale runs from Southern (no heat) to 'Shut the Cluck Up.' A different tradition than Memphis fried chicken, and worth having both in your rotation. Hours on their site.

  • Kukuruku Crispy ChickenPoplar Ave + Bartlett, Cordova, Lakeland

The newcomer with a story: a Filipino crispy-chicken brand that picked Memphis for its U.S. debut — lechon-inspired, marinated, genuinely different. Four metro stores, most Mon–Sat 11am–8pm, Sun 12–7.

What changed — so you don't drive to a locked door

Two famous names are gone: Miss Polly's Soul City Cafe on Beale has closed (its own domain is dead), and Joes' Fried Chicken on Highland never reopened after its building sold — its site still promises 'Joes' will be back,' but that promise has stood for years. And one address correction worth repeating: Uncle Lou's left Millbranch Rd in February 2025 for 1725 Winchester Rd. Every kitchen on this page was verified open at its own source in August 2026; when the map moves, this page moves with it.

The honest answers

Who has the best fried chicken in Memphis?

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is the national-reputation answer — the spicy salt-and-cayenne bird, downtown at 310 S Front St since 2001. Locals split their loyalty with Uncle Lou's honey-dipped 'Sweet Spicy Love' in Whitehaven and Jack Pirtle's, frying since 1957. All three verified open at their own sources, August 2026.

Why is Gus's fried chicken famous?

The recipe: a spicy, cayenne-laced batter Napoleon 'Na' Vanderbilt developed at his tavern in Mason, Tennessee in 1953, kept secret in the family since. GQ named it one of ten 'meals worth flying for,' the Travel Channel ranked it among America's tastiest restaurants, and the downtown Memphis room has drawn lines since it opened in 2001.

Did Gus's start in Memphis?

No — Gus's started in Mason, Tennessee, about 40 minutes northeast of Memphis, where Napoleon 'Na' Vanderbilt began selling his spicy fried chicken in 1953. His son Vernon 'Gus' Bonner renamed the family spot Gus's in 1984, and the first Memphis location opened on Front Street in November 2001. The Mason original still operates.

What's the difference between Memphis fried chicken and Nashville hot chicken?

Memphis fried chicken builds the heat into the batter — Gus's cayenne crust is spicy before any sauce touches it — while Nashville hot chicken (Hattie B's, on South Cooper) fries the bird first, then slathers it in cayenne paste by heat level. Memphis also has its own honey-dipped school, led by Uncle Lou's.
