Soul Food in Memphis: Where the Real Thing Lives

TL;DR
The best soul food in Memphis: The Four Way in Soulsville (since 1946, where Dr. King ate), Alcenia's in the Pinch, The Cupboard's daily meat-and-three on Union (since 1943), Uncle Lou's honey-dipped fried chicken in Whitehaven, and Johnnie Mae's two blocks from Stax. Eleven spots, every one verified at its own site in August 2026, with hours, closed days, and the history that makes soul food and soul music the same story here.
In Memphis, soul food and soul music are the same story told two ways — the neighborhood that gave the world Stax Records will also hand you the city's best turkey and dressing, two blocks apart. This is the food the city actually runs on: fried catfish, collards, candied yams, cornbread, and recipes guarded across three generations.
Here's the current, verified map: eleven soul food spots confirmed at their own pages in August 2026, with hours, closed days, and what to order at each — because a few beloved names have closed in the last two years, and the lists that still send people to them are doing nobody a favor. The institutions
Rooms measured in generations, not years — every one re-verified, August 2026.
- The Four WaySoulsville, 998 Mississippi Blvd
The oldest soul food room in Memphis — serving since 1946 — and one of the few dining rooms where Black and white Memphians ate together in the civil-rights era. Dr. King ate here, including on his final Memphis visit. The turkey and dressing and the peach cobbler are the orders, most plates under $12. Wed–Sun 11am–5pm (closed Mon–Tue), with a Saturday jazz brunch 11–2.
- Alcenia'sThe Pinch, 317 N Main St
BJ Chester-Tamayo's made-to-order soul food and the warmest welcome downtown — the fried chicken, the bread pudding, and the house 'Ghetto-Aid' have carried decades of regulars. Tue–Fri 11am–5pm, Sat 9am–3pm, closed Sun–Mon. (One block from the hotels on our downtown restaurants list.)
- The CupboardMidtown, 1400 Union Ave
The city's daily meat-and-three, going since 1943 — fried green tomatoes, homemade dressing, and a rotating vegetable board with a detail worth knowing: the vegetables are cooked with no meat or animal fat, so vegetarians eat as well as anyone. Open 7am–8pm every single day; entrées run $2–$16.
- Orange Mound GrillOrange Mound, 1238 Airways Blvd
'Soul Food Since 1947,' says the sign — in Orange Mound, one of the first American neighborhoods built by and for Black residents, in a building that dates to 1942. It runs on word of mouth, not a website, so call 901-215-8095 before a special trip — that's the honest note for a genuine piece of Memphis history.

Soulsville and the neighborhoods
The tradition's home turf — and the kitchens carrying it forward.
- Johnnie Mae'sSoulsville, 969 E McLemore Ave
Two blocks from the Stax Museum, built by Derrick Craig in honor of his mother Johnnie Mae — gumbo, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and rotating daily specials that read like a family cookbook. Check their site for current hours before the drive.
- Uncle Lou's Fried ChickenWhitehaven, 1725 Winchester Rd
The honey-dipped fried chicken that made national TV — Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives came in 2008 and the line hasn't shortened since. The recipe comes from great-grandmother Rosie Gillespie of Nesbit, Mississippi; the 'Sweet Spicy Love' bird is the move. Dining room daily from 10:30am, drive-thru until midnight Mon–Sat. (The whole bird story is on our best fried chicken list.)
- Southern Hands Homestyle CookingWinchester Rd + 3 more
Mrs. Betty Baskin and her five children opened this in 2008 and grew it to four Memphis locations — come for the fried chicken, candied yams, and collards, stay for the signature cornbread loaves people carry out by the bag. Winchester flagship open daily (11am–6pm most days, to 5 Saturdays).
- Fabulous Flavors & FriendsWhitehaven, 2063 E Brooks Rd
The diner-plus-food-truck near the airport, going since 2014 — chicken and waffles, wings, and 'Big Mama's Famous Peach Cobbler', which is exactly as advertised. Mon–Fri 11am–5pm only (closed weekends), so it's a lunch mission.
The new chapters
Where the tradition is stretching — riverside, Delta-style, and downtown.
- Mahogany River TerraceMud Island, 280 Island Dr
Upscale Southern with Creole flair and a Mississippi River view — blackened catfish over dirty rice with shrimp and crawfish, seafood gumbo and grits, deep-fried lobster tail, and live music Fridays 5–8. Lunch weekdays, weekend brunch, dinner nightly. (Make an island evening of it — Mud Island's comeback is worth the drive over.)
- Soul Fish CafeCooper-Young + 3 more
The Delta-catfish end of the spectrum — fried, grilled, or blackened, with po'boys on New Orleans bread. 'Southern. Bona fide.' is their line and it holds. All four locations open daily 11am–9pm.
- SageDowntown, 94 S Main St
'Fusion soul' — the modern downtown take: soul food technique in an urban-chic room with a bar to match, brunch through late-night menus. Wed–Sat plus Sunday brunch; reservations by phone only.
What changed — so you don't drive to a locked door
The dated facts worth knowing: Ms. Girlee's closed in December 2024 (a successor soul food spot has been planned for the space), Miss Polly's Soul City Cafe on Beale has closed, DeJavu Creole Soul closed both locations in April 2026, and Mahogany's original Chickasaw Oaks room closed in January 2025 — its successor is the River Terrace on Mud Island, above. Every kitchen on this page was verified at its own site in August 2026; when one changes, this page changes with it.

The honest answers
Where's the best soul food in Memphis?
Start at The Four Way in Soulsville — serving since 1946, the oldest soul food room in the city, open Wed–Sun 11am–5pm. Alcenia's in the Pinch District and The Cupboard's daily meat-and-three on Union Avenue complete the institutions. All three verified open at their own sites, August 2026.
What is a meat-and-three?
A meat-and-three is the classic Southern plate format: you pick one meat — fried chicken, catfish, meatloaf — and three vegetables or sides from a rotating daily board, usually collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, or okra, with cornbread alongside. In Memphis, The Cupboard has run the format daily since 1943.
What's the connection between soul food and Soulsville?
Soulsville USA is the South Memphis neighborhood that produced Stax Records — and its kitchens fed the musicians who made the sound. The Four Way (since 1946) hosted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and generations of Stax artists, and Johnnie Mae's serves two blocks from the Stax Museum today. In Memphis the food and the music are one tradition.
Where can I get soul food near downtown Memphis?
Alcenia's at 317 N Main is the downtown answer — one block from the Pinch District hotels, open Tue–Fri 11am–5pm and Sat 9am–3pm. Sage on South Main does a modern 'fusion soul' take Wed–Sat, and Mahogany River Terrace serves upscale Southern-Creole with a river view on Mud Island, five minutes away.
