A new music room on Autumn, lost Gentrys tapes at Crosstown, and a $5 arena in Nesbit
A new music room on Autumn, lost Gentrys tapes at Crosstown, and a $5 arena in Nesbit
Hey Memphis 👋 It's Wednesday. Sunny, 99, heat index 107 — the fourth day running we've typed those exact numbers. The new wrinkle is that it's still reading 103 after dark.
Good night to be out late anyway. Memphis gets a brand-new music room this evening, and a two-minute walk away Sun Records is putting on tapes the rest of us have never heard — with the man who sang them sitting right there.
☕ Byway today
High Point Grocery — 7 AM–1 PM
Germantown OrthoSouth — 2100 Exeter Rd., 7 AM–1 PM
Both trailers out on a Wednesday, which doesn't happen every week. That's per their posted schedule, and the trailers do move — their IG has the full week. New here? Our coffee guide has the story on the Airstream that comes to you.
☀️ Today in Memphis
Community Preview Night — Satellite Music Hall, 1291 Autumn Ave., 6–9 PM, $10. The city's newest music room lets everybody in before its grand-opening weekend, which is already sold out both nights, and every dollar of face value goes to Stax Music Academy. Details
Sun Records, Listening Session – It's Been So Long by The Gentrys — Memphis Listening Lab, 1350 Concourse Ave., 6–7:30 PM, free. Sun has a long-awaited Gentrys release out, and Jimmy Hart — the band's frontman long before he was wrestling's Mouth of the South — is there in person to tell the story behind it. Doors at 5:30 and seating is first-come, so go early. Details
Keer / Tayls / Wagoneer [Small Room-Downstairs] — Hi Tone, 282 N. Cleveland St., doors 7, show 8, $13.50, 21+. Three bands in the downstairs room, which holds about as many people as a decent house party. Details
Paul Revere Williams: American Architect — Art Museum of the University of Memphis, 3750 Norriswood Dr., 9 AM–5 PM, free. Williams's father waited tables at the Peabody before the family went west, and Williams grew up to design the original St. Jude — a five-pointed star of a building, long since swallowed by the campus that grew around it. Two hundred photographs of his work, and it costs nothing to walk in. Details
OPEN RIDE - Regular Riding — DeSoto County Agri-Education Center, 1170 Starlanding Rd. W, Nesbit, 10 AM–5 PM, $5. The county's new 200-acre center opens its outdoor arena to anybody with a horse and five dollars, seven hours straight, no special equipment. Details
Coffee & Color: Evening — Germantown Community Library, 6–7 PM, free, 18 and up. An hour of coffee, quiet talk and coloring pages with nothing to sign up for — the evening one is the drop-in session. Details
👶 With the kids
Fall Tram Tours — Memphis Botanic Garden, 750 Cherry Rd., 10 AM–2 PM, free with Garden admission ($12 adults, $7 kids 2–12, under 2 free). Today is day one of the fall run, and the tram loops all 96 acres, so short legs get to see the whole place without walking a step. Details
Splash pads — David Carnes, Douglass, Hollywood, McFarland, Orange Mound, Peabody and Whitehaven Parks, 10 AM–7:45 PM, free. Last week of the season: all seven shut off after Labor Day and don't come back until May. Details
📰 The Rundown
MLGW's free pilot light checks start today and run through September 30. Appointments are Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, and the number is 901-544-6549. From October 1 the same visit costs $68 for up to three gas appliances — though it stays free year-round if you're 60 or older or have a disability. (via Action News 5)
The zoo wants you to pick its new logo. Four concepts are up for a public vote, and whichever wins goes on to have its colors and lettering finalized. Voting closes September 14. (via Action News 5)
Outside lanes on the I-55 bridge are closing for inspection, one direction at a time, starting with southbound. Crews work between the morning and afternoon rushes, and it's scheduled to run through September 17. (via Action News 5)
Belmont Grill poured its last one on Saturday, after nearly 42 years on Poplar. The 90-year-old building needed more work than it was worth and has been sold, though owner Jeff Anderson hasn't ruled out the name turning up somewhere else. (via Memphis Flyer)
🍽️ Food & Drink
Thirsty Thursday — Meddlesome Brewing Co., 7750 Trinity Rd. #114, Cordova, tomorrow 4–10 PM. Every beer is $5 all night, and the River Rat Rounders run free poker from six. Details
🎟️ Looking Ahead
Delta Fair opens Friday — Agricenter International, September 4–13. Gate is $15 for anyone 13 and up, $10 for kids 5–12 and for seniors, free for 4 and under, and buying online ahead of time knocks a couple of dollars off each. Ride wristbands are $31 on weekdays and $36 Saturday and Sunday.
The Shell's 90th starts a day earlier than we said last week. Booker T. Jones opens it Thursday September 10, 7–9 PM — that night's ticketed — and then it's free all weekend: a birthday picnic with the Memphis Youth Symphony Friday at noon, Sounds of the Shell Saturday at 7, and The Gathering with Evvie McKinney plus a Memphis Studio Super-Set on Sunday.
Wrestling night at the ballpark, Saturday — Redbirds and Durham, September 5, first pitch 6:05, tickets from $9.01. Memphis Wrestling takes the plaza before and after the game, the first 1,400 fans get a Rockey "Bobble-Elbow," and there are fireworks after. Jimmy Hart signs autographs for free — yes, the same Jimmy Hart who's at the Listening Lab tonight.
🏡 Community Corner
A brand-new room opens on Autumn Avenue tonight, which has us thinking about the old ones. What's the Memphis room where you saw something you still bring up years later — a club that's gone now, a church basement, somebody's garage off Cooper? Hit reply with the room and the night. We'll run the best of them.
The tip line never closes — a pop-up, a band, a Wednesday we missed. No gatekeeping — send it to hey@heymemphis.co.
That's it for today — see you tomorrow at 6.
— Josh
