A jazz jam that lets players in free, a free Tuesday at the zoo, and the lights coming back on

Hey Memphis 👋 It's Tuesday. A chance of storms before ten this morning, then mostly sunny and 94, heat index climbing to about 102, down to 75 overnight with more storms after one. Yesterday's 89 was the mercy. Today takes it back.

First, though — we hope you and yours are safe. Saturday night was hard on a lot of Memphis, and if your block is still dark, that's a rough stretch in this kind of heat. We're thinking of everyone still waiting on a truck. MLGW expects the vast majority of the outages back by Thursday evening, and there's more below. A good chunk of today's list is free and indoors, which felt like the right call this week.

Off The Clock: After Work Set with DJ Rhinestonee — Renasant Convention Center, 255 N. Main St., 4–7 PM, free with RSVP. The convention center throws open its Main Street patio to whoever's just clocked out, with three hours of DJ Rhinestonee and nothing to buy at the door. Grab the RSVP before you go, and if the sky opens up, it moves inside. Details

Jazz Jam Session: Hosted by Kenny Reed — The Green Room at Crosstown Arts, doors at 7, show at 7:30, $7. Here's the part worth knowing: it's free if you're playing. Bring a horn and you're not in the audience, you're in the band — next to a high schooler on one side and somebody forty years into this on the other. Details

Toy Box: Game Night — Hattiloo Culture Box, 37 Cooper St., 5:30–8:30 PM, pay what you want. Chess, checkers, Connect Four, Jenga and Mancala on the tables, Afro-Lounge records from across the diaspora on the speakers, and you decide what the night was worth on your way in. Details

TN Tuesday — Memphis Zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place, 9 AM–4 PM, free for Tennessee residents. Free every Tuesday if you live in this state, and note the zoo has cut the hours short — but the reservation is the whole game: everyone two and up needs a ticket, six to a reservation, and anyone 17 or older has to produce a Tennessee ID at the gate. Parking's still $10. Details

The Fast and the Furious - 25th Anniversary — Malco Paradiso at 7:30 and 10 PM, Collierville at 7:25, DeSoto at 7:30. Twenty-five years since Dom Toretto explained about the ten seconds, back on a real screen for one night in three corners of the metro. Malco doesn't publish prices on its own site, so that's a box-office question. Details

Learn n' Play — Burch Library, Collierville, 11–11:30 AM, free, ages 2 to 5. Not a program, a playgroup: half an hour of toys and other toddlers, and they'll bring out a playpen if you've got a baby along too. Details

Read, Relax, Recap — Frayser Library, 2220 James Rd., 4–5 PM, free, ages 5 to 12. The entire ask is twenty minutes with any book the kid picks. No assigned title, no reading level, no quiz at the end. Details

📰 The Rundown

Saturday night's storm was the seventh most damaging in MLGW's history — a bow echo with straight-line winds over 70 mph that took power from more than 140,000 customers. More than 600 crew have been on it around the clock since, with hospitals, water treatment and the biggest circuits first, and MLGW expects the vast majority of customers back by Thursday evening. School is back on today too — MSCS reopens on a normal schedule except for eighteen buildings still without power, and the district's list is the one to check before you drive. Orange Mound's community land trust is getting its first house — the ABODE demonstration home at 1390 Marechalneil St., set to break ground this week, the opening move on twelve vacant lots the city picked up. The trust structure is the entire point: it keeps the houses affordable to buy and longtime residents in place, instead of letting the land get flipped the moment values climb. The city intends to run the template elsewhere. (via City of Memphis)

The airport is getting a lounge anybody can walk into. The airport authority board signed a twelve-year lease with CAVU Experiences for a 3,200-square-foot Escape Lounge in the main rotunda — $2.9 million, with a Memphis-sourced food and drink program written into the deal. No airline membership involved; you just buy your way in. No opening date yet. (via Memphis Flyer)

A barbecue truck is taking over the pizza place inside the gun range. Lee and Jeannie Hobbs are moving Smoking LeRoy's into its first permanent address at 2770 Whitten Road, the space Fox Ridge Pizza left behind inside Top Gun Memphis. Slow-smoked barbecue plus breakfast, sandwiches and homemade sides — and the truck keeps running for catering either way. No opening date announced yet. (via WhatNow Memphis) · The truck

🎟️ Looking Ahead

901 Weekend starts Friday — a creative mixer at the Halloran Centre from 5 to 7, then a kickoff concert at the National Civil Rights Museum from 7 to 10, with a Shell on Wheels stage and pop-ups down South Main alongside Trolley Night. Sunday the 30th is 901 on Beale, with stages at Handy Park and the New Daisy plus a family art zone. The city's announcement doesn't list admission, so check before you plan around it. Details

The university's art museum reopens Saturday — AMUM has been shut since August 10 for a reinstall and comes back August 29 with Paul Revere Williams: American Architect: more than 200 photographs of the pioneering Black architect's buildings, by decade, from the twenties to the sixties. Its own director spent two years shooting them. Through October 11. Details

Heading south this weekend? Give yourself the extra minutes — the Getwell Road exit off I-240 East closes 8 PM Friday to 6 AM Monday for bridge work over Black Bayou, and the SR-385 westbound ramp onto I-240 East shuts the same weekend. Details
