Free Monday at the Lorraine, a hundred colleges under one roof, and opera in a branch library

Hey Memphis 👋 It’s Monday, and the National Weather Service has a heat advisory up from 6 this morning through tomorrow evening: highs near 100, with the heat index as high as 109. September clearly did not get the memo. So we leaned today’s list indoors — wherever you land, bring water.

Free Monday at the National Civil Rights Museum — 450 Mulberry St., 3 PM until closing, free for Tennessee residents. Every Monday afternoon the Lorraine drops admission for anyone with a Tennessee ID, good for one adult and up to five kids. Regular adult admission is $25, which makes this the cheapest serious afternoon in the city. Details

Memphis Area College Night — Memphis Sports & Events Center, 995 Early Maxwell Blvd., 5:30–7:30 PM, free. More than a hundred colleges set up tables under one roof at Liberty Park, run by a volunteer committee of local high-school counselors. It is the one evening a Memphis sophomore can ask fifty admissions officers the same question and compare the answers. Details

30 Days of Opera — East Shelby Library, 7200 E. Shelby Dr., 2–2:30 PM, free. Opera Memphis spends September turning up in public rooms across the city, and Monday afternoon it is a branch library off East Shelby Drive. Half an hour, no ticket, all ages, and you are back in the car before school pickup. Details

Bingo at Tony’s Trophy Room — 929 W. Poplar Ave., Collierville, 6:30–8:30 PM, free. The Collierville library took Library Card Sign-Up Month out of the building and into a sports bar. Bingo, swag, and food and drink you can buy at the bar. All ages play free. Details

Poker Night at Bardog Tavern — 73 Monroe Ave., 7–10 PM, and the buy-in is a food or drink purchase. Downstairs in the Underdog: order a burger, that is your entry, and every extra order buys you another thousand chips. Show before 7 and you start with two thousand more. 21 and up. Details

Hollywood Drive-In — Hollywood Library, 1530 N. Hollywood St., 3:30–5 PM, free, ages 8 to 12. A classic movie plus crafts built around it, aimed squarely at the age group that usually gets skipped. Details

Gatsby’s Gallery — Germantown Community Library, 1925 Exeter Rd., 9:30 AM–9 PM, free. Pick up a mini canvas at the information desk, paint whatever the Jazz Age means to you, hand it back, and it joins a library-wide gallery this fall. Drop in any time the doors are open; supplies are limited. Details

East End Skating Center — 5718 Mt Moriah Rd., 1–8 PM, $11 plus $4 if you need skates. Seven hours of indoor rink on a heat-advisory Monday. One thing worth knowing: a kid dropped off alone pays an extra $8 unless a parent registers them first. Details

South Front Street closes today between Mina and Butler. Crews are putting in new sanitary sewer line, and the block is expected to stay shut until about the 30th. It is part of SARP10, the ten-year program aimed at cutting sewer overflows. (via the City of Memphis)

Mayo Clinic Laboratories is setting up diagnostic testing operations in Southaven. The state puts the investment north of $30 million and the job count at 234, and says the company picked the building partly because it can be running quickly once equipment is in. (via Action News 5)

Orange Mound has a new STEM center. Red Zone Ministries, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and TVA cut the ribbon last week on a space at 2855 Park Ave. where kids get hands-on time with tech and robotics tools. Executive director Howard Eddings says the hope is that they grow into tech careers and stay in Memphis to do it. (via Action News 5)

The trees on the Main Street Mall may finally get some attention. The Downtown Memphis Commission is weighing a $144,100 plan to replace 38 trees, fill 27 empty tree wells and maintain about 180 healthy ones across the Mall, Court Square and Civic Center Plaza. Two of its boards vote this week. (via Memphis Flyer)

Little Petals is headed to Raleigh — the Sichuan spinoff from the Petals of a Peony people has announced a spot at 4594 Yale Rd., in the old Nam King space. No opening date yet, which is the only part of this we can’t tell you. Details

Mid-South Fair — October 1 to 11 at the Landers Center in Southaven. Worth knowing today rather than later: advance admission is $8 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors, and that price only holds through September 20. After that it climbs to $10, and at the gate it is $15. Details

Hispanic Heritage Month at Crosstown Concourse — Thursday, 11 AM to 7 PM in the Central Atrium. A flamenco guitar and flute duo opens it, Cazateatro brings Legends of Latin America at 1, a mariachi band plays 2 to 4, and Tropical Fusion closes it out at 5. Parking is free. Details

Clue at the Orpheum — opens tomorrow and runs through Sunday. The Broadway touring production of the board game, which is a sentence that should not work and somehow does. Details
