Satellite Music Hall Opens, Free Metal Night at the Shell, and a Friday in the 901

Hey Memphis 👋 It's Friday. Sunny and 99, heat index climbing to 109, and the Weather Service pushed its heat advisory out through 8 tomorrow night.

The weekend we mapped out yesterday actually starts tonight — and it has already moved twice since we hit send. Saturday and Sunday both got hotter (101 now, both days), and the room we pointed you to on Wednesday has its real grand opening in about twelve hours. Yesterday's guide is here if you missed it.

☀️ Today in Memphis

The Band CAMINO opens Satellite Music Hall — 1291 Autumn Ave., 7 PM. The 1,300-seat room next to Crosstown Concourse gets its grand opening tonight, and a Memphis band breaks it in. Both nights sold out, as we flagged Wednesday, so this one's a wave from the sidewalk rather than a plan — but the room is open now, and Valerie June (Sept 17), Project Pat (Sept 26), Modest Mouse (Oct 12) and Iron and Wine (Oct 27) are all still bookable. The name is the good part: it's after Satellite Records, which is what Stax was called before it was Stax. Details

Metal Night: KaRRot — Overton Park Shell, 1928 Poplar Ave., 7–9 PM, free. Worth repeating from yesterday's guide, because it's still the easiest free plan in town: a Nashville KoRn tribute on the Shell's free series, thrown by the Metal Museum the night before it opens its new building down the street. Come dressed metal — their words, blacksmith or rock, dealer's choice. Details

Ask Dylan / Kevin & Graham / Twin Heart Trap — B-Side, 7 PM. Three bands, one of them driving up from Birmingham. B-Side doesn't keep a calendar anywhere except Instagram, which is exactly why somebody should be telling you about it. Details

Memphis Symphony Big Band at The Grove — GPAC, 1801 Exeter Rd., Germantown, gates 6, music 7–8:30 PM. $30 plus fees, $5 for ages 5–18, free for 4 and under. Lawn chairs, food trucks, bring your own cooler. The orchestra playing it is the one that keeps the Peabody Skyway Ballroom broadcast archive — those big-band remotes are the ones a very young Sam Phillips announced, years before Sun. Details

Music Box: D'Vonna Taylor — Hattiloo's Culture Box, Overton Square, 7:30–9:30 PM, $20 advance, $25 door. A small back room and a singer, plus a second set at ten if your Friday starts late. Details

Keer / Phases / Vixxen — Hi Tone, 282 N. Cleveland St., doors 7, show 8, $13.50. Three bands in the downstairs room for less than a movie ticket. Details

👶 With the kids

Delta Fair opens — Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Rd., gates 4–11 PM. $15 for 13 and up, $10 for kids 5–12 and seniors 65+, free for 4 and under, a couple dollars less online. Ride wristbands $31. Ten days of it, starting tonight — and gates at four is the number that matters in this heat. Details

Family Movie Night — Cordova Library, 6–8 PM, free, all ages. Harry Potter, then How to Train Your Dragon. Two movies, no tickets, and air conditioning nobody's paying for. Details

📰 The Rundown

The heat has started rearranging the weekend. The Weather Service extended its advisory through 8 p.m. Saturday, Saturday and Sunday are now both forecast to hit 101, and Slider Inn says its outdoor bar and food truck won't open until 6 tomorrow because of it. More on the new room: Live Nation is running Satellite Music Hall on a five-year deal with Crosstown, expects to put at least 100 shows a year in it, and has partnered with Stax Music Academy to get local students working the audio and business side. (via Action News 5)

South of the line: Southaven's city offices are closed Monday for Labor Day, and sanitation runs a day behind all week. (via City of Southaven)

Fresh Food Friday at Roxie's Market — 520 N. Third St., Uptown, 12–6 PM. A neighborhood market run out of an Uptown corner store: local growers, local vendors, and money that stays on the block. Their words, and they're the right ones: fresh food, local love, real community. Details

Cooper-Young 4-Miler — Friday, September 18. Registration's open, and it's the neighborhood association's own fundraiser, so it pays for the things you already like about Cooper-Young. Trestlefest after: pizza, beer and yacht rock under the trestle. Details

Cooper-Young Beerfest — Saturday, October 17. Tickets went on sale this week at early-bird prices. Yes, that's two Cooper-Young items in a row. They've had a productive week. Details
